8th Grade Student HS Registration Powerpoint

Last week and this week, the high school counselors are presenting some information to 8th graders in order to prepare them for high school AND the process of choosing their classes over the next 4 years. The powerpoint presentation they are using is embedded in this blog in the space below. Feel free to go through it as well and discuss any questions you have with your child. The counselors will be back at the end of this week to meet with students and start the process of planning their 4-year course schedule. Have a great week!

This would be a great time for students to be more exposed to STEM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

Are you doing anything to bring in guest speakers from these professions to discuss? As a woman in a technology field I can honestly say women are outnumbered by men and this the time to not only engage all of our children in this discussion but also have a special focus towards our young women.

Yes, in fact, Kim Flagor and I wrote a grant to bring Hyperstream into our school this year, a huge STEM initiative. We are starting our Hyperstream Club up next week and recruited boys and girls, but a focus on the girls, especially those who were not connected in other groups. We have had a great response. In the future, our HS could also get a STEM grant and start their own focus. I know Ms. Cupp has had great attendance the past few years at the "Road Less Traveled" event in Ames that brings female middle school students to Iowa State University for a day of Science, Math, and Technology. One last thing that helps in its own way is by having several female math, science, and technology teachers at the high school. This has helped our numbers of female students increase in these classes as well. The idea of a guest speaker is a great idea too! Thanks for the comment.
